Bud Fields and his family are shown in their own home, not in a studio, which sets this portrait apart from many family pictures of its time. The setting is the point: the house, its furnishings, and the way the household is arranged around one another offer a glimpse of daily domestic life. Photographs of rural Southern families from the early twentieth century often recorded tenant and farm households during years of economic hardship, and this one invites viewers to look closely at the ordinary details that surround a family's everyday life.
