Five members of the Benjamin family stand around a classical column in this half-plate daguerreotype, which someone later hand-colored. The mat is stamped with the name of Whitney, a studio in Rochester, New York, and the picture dates from roughly 1845 to 1858, when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process. Exposures then lasted seconds or longer, so sitters had to hold still while the silvered copper plate recorded their likenesses. The donor, Frances Benjamin Johnston, later became a noted photographer, and she is also named among the family members pictured.
