A seated girl reads aloud about George Washington while a woodcutter and his family stop their work to listen, and that moment of shared attention sets this painting apart from the other family scenes on the board. A. Castaigne painted it in oil for *The Century Magazine*, where it was published in the April 1894 issue (volume 47, page 815). The picture presents reading aloud as a household pleasure in a working rural setting, with Washington serving as a familiar figure of national pride for young readers of the period. Castaigne, a French-born illustrator, produced many such magazine images for American publications in the 1890s.
