What sets this print apart is its gum bichromate process, a hand-worked method in which pigment is brushed onto paper and shaped by the printer's own touch. Gertrude Käsebier, a Photo-Secession member and one of the best-known American pictorialists of the early 1900s, used the technique to turn domestic scenes of mothers and children into soft, painterly images. Her work often moved away from the sharp detail of commercial portraiture toward gentle tones and quiet composition. The print is signed by the artist in the lower left corner and dates to about 1900.
