Two children in regional Dutch dress stand side by side in this color postcard, and the record notes that it is actually two images mounted together on one sheet. The Netherlands produced many such souvenir cards between about 1890 and 1940, when tourists and publishers sold views of local costume as a picture of the country's traditional villages. The clothing is the real subject here: the caps, bodices and wooden-soled shoes were marked distinctions that varied from one fishing or farming town to another, so the card records a regional identity as much as a childhood.
