Spencer's painting of a Fourth of July picnic, engraved by Samuel Hollyer and J. Rogers, shows a family holiday outing, and the subject list also includes servants, which places household labor within the leisure scene. Lilly Martin Spencer was one of the best-known American women painters of the nineteenth century, and her domestic genre scenes reached wide audiences through prints like this one. H. Peters and P. & J. Levy published the engraving in New York in the mid-1860s, with copyright entered in 1864, during the Civil War. Prints such as this brought sentimental family scenes into middle-class homes.
