Lilly Martin Spencer's painting *One of Life's Happy Hours* reached most viewers as an engraving by Alfred Jones, a form that carried the scene into far more homes than the original canvas could. Spencer (1822-1902), born in England and raised in the United States, became known for warm, often humorous pictures of household life, and she balanced that work with raising a large family of her own. Engravings of sentimental domestic scenes were popular in the later nineteenth century, when many families chose printed pictures to decorate their parlors.
