The label on this glass negative names Alford B. Chapman of the 57th New York, but that title comes from a sleeve whose accuracy has not been verified. Dated 1860, the plate predates the Civil War by about a year, so it reflects peacetime militia life rather than any wartime campaign. It was made by the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose and develop a glass plate while it was still wet, a demanding method that produced sharp detail. Earlier cataloging credited the plate to Alexander Gardner, a photographer later known for his war imagery, but that attribution has since been set aside.
