The only identifying name on this negative is "Andrews of Mass," written on its sleeve and never independently confirmed, so the subject could be a person, a place or a business. The plate dates to 1860, a year before the Civil War began, and was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose and develop a glass plate while it was still wet. Earlier cataloging credited the image to Alexander Gardner, the Scottish-born photographer known for his wartime views, but that attribution has since been revised.
