A man identified on the negative sleeve as Alford B. Chapman of the 57th New York is the subject of this glass plate, made with the wet collodion process that was standard in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The process required each plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried, which gave these images their sharp detail. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a prominent Civil War photographer, but that attribution is no longer accepted. Its 1860 date falls before the war began in April 1861, so the unit name may reflect a later identification.
