The title sets the hook: Panama lies a few degrees north of the equator, where winters as northern readers know them do not exist, so "Winter in Panama" offers a warm alternative to a cold season at home. The poster was printed in New York by the Neogravure Printing Co., probably in 1917 or 1918, when the Army was expanding its ranks during the First World War. Rotogravure, a photomechanical process, could produce large runs of detailed images cheaply, which made it useful for recruiting. American troops were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone to guard the waterway, and the poster invites viewers to consider that posting as a chance for adventure abroad.
