What sets this print apart is its setting: the game is played in water rather than on a dry diamond, and the caption card places it on a bathing beach. Water baseball was a summer novelty in the early 1910s, when crowds at seaside and lakeside resorts watched or joined games that adapted the field game to shallow water, where wading and swimming changed how players ran, threw, and fielded. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs, and is dated to late July 1914. The details come from old, unverified caption cards, so the exact location and date should be read with that in mind.
