Sheet-music covers rarely paired a dance form with a sport, which sets this lithograph apart from the other baseball pictures on the board. Its title, *Baseball Polka*, suggests the publisher hoped to ride the game's popularity in the late 1860s. By then the National Association of Base Ball Players, founded in 1857, had helped organize the sport, and Civil War soldiers had carried it to many parts of the country. Caption notes for this print are unverified, so the designer and publisher are best checked against the catalog record.
