The Lewis and Clark bicentennial map ties this picture to the Corps of Discovery expedition of 1804 to 1806, which Thomas Jefferson championed after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 opened the vast western territory to American exploration. Issued as part of the commemoration held from 2003 to 2006, the map traces the explorers' route from St. Louis up the Missouri River, over the Rocky Mountains, and down the Columbia to the Pacific coast. Its cartography reflects how much the expedition's journals and field observations transformed the American understanding of the West. Jefferson, who selected Meriwether Lewis to lead the mission, had long hoped to learn more about the region's rivers, peoples and resources, making the map a fitting emblem of his presidency.
