Few images from the Corps of Discovery's journey show its diplomacy as directly as this etching, which pictures Captain Lewis and Captain Clark holding a council with Native leaders. It appeared on page 26 of Patrick Gass's journal of the expedition, published in Philadelphia in 1810 by Matthew Carey. Councils like this one were a central part of the 1804 to 1806 journey, which President Thomas Jefferson had sent west to map the country and open relations and trade with the nations along its rivers. The engraving reflects how the expedition was remembered, with its leaders cast as envoys of the young republic.
