Taken on October 3, 1929, this glass negative shows President Herbert Hoover with members of the National Council of Catholic Women, a national federation of Catholic women's organizations. It was made in Hoover's first year in office, about three weeks before the stock market crash that would come to define his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events, produced the image, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Look for faint streaks and blemishes, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
