The detail that sets this print apart is its setting: the mouth of the Columbia River, where the Lewis and Clark expedition reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. After months of travel up the Missouri and across the Rocky Mountains, the Corps of Discovery had finally arrived at the coast, and the party built Fort Clatsop nearby to winter over. This halftone was made in 1906, a century after the Jefferson administration sent the explorers west, and it reflects how Americans of that era remembered the expedition as a founding national story. Printed images like this one, reproduced from earlier artwork, helped spread that version of the journey widely.
