This map charts the route of Lewis and Clark from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. It is a copy of a drawing by William Clark, one of the expedition's two leaders, made during the journey that the United States government ordered in 1804. Samuel Lewis, a Philadelphia engraver and mapmaker and not Meriwether Lewis, copied the drawing, and the Philadelphia firm Bradford and Inskeep published it in 1814. The route appears as a single line across a largely blank interior, a reminder of how little of the region had been mapped when the expedition set out.
