This view is distinctive for its vantage point: it looks across the landscape from Lewis Mountain, taking in both the University of Virginia and Monticello in a single scene. Thomas Jefferson founded the university, which opened in 1825, and designed its buildings, including the Rotunda at its center. Monticello, his home, sits on a nearby hilltop, so the picture ties together the two most important places in his legacy. The print was made from a drawing done on site and issued in color by the firm of E. Sachse & Co., a lithography house known for landscape views of American towns and institutions in the mid-19th century.
