This long, narrow print is one of a numbered series of views of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, and its panoramic format suits a campus laid out as a long, open lawn. Thomas Jefferson designed the university and founded it in 1819, and its buildings follow his neoclassical plan, with a central Rotunda modeled on the Pantheon in Rome and rows of pavilions and colonnades. The print was made by the Haines Photo Co. of Conneaut, Ohio, a firm known for mass-produced souvenir views, and its date around 1909 places it in the era when such photographs were widely sold to visitors and alumni.
