The long, narrow format of this 10 by 43 inch print suits the University of Virginia's layout, which Thomas Jefferson designed around a central Lawn lined with pavilions and anchored by the Rotunda at its head. Jefferson founded the university in 1819, and it opened in 1825, so by about 1909 the grounds had the settled look he intended. Haines Photo Co. of Conneaut, Ohio, sold many such panoramic views of American towns and campuses in the early twentieth century, and the print offers a wide, unhurried view of how the campus was arranged.
