This map pairs the Great Lakes with a western interior that many Americans of its day knew only from rumor and fur traders' reports. Jefferson's presidency is tied to that gap: the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 nearly doubled the nation's size, and the Lewis and Clark expedition that followed was sent largely to map and describe those lands. Maps like this one show how much of the West was still blank or guesswork, and they are worth comparing with later editions as the surveyed outlines of the continent gradually filled in.
