From a southeast vantage point, this 1890 color lithograph by J.W. Morton Jr. shows the stockade at Andersonville, the Confederate prison in southwest Georgia where Union soldiers were held during the last year of the Civil War. Opened in early 1864, the camp was built for about 10,000 men but at its peak held many more, and disease, exposure and malnutrition killed roughly 13,000 prisoners before it closed in 1865. Morton's aerial perspective, a popular format for battlefield and site views at the time, gives a sense of how the enclosure dominated the landscape. The print was copyrighted in 1890, a quarter century after the events it depicts.
