Shown full length and standing, the king is presented in a format meant to convey dignity and authority. This image is a photomechanical reproduction, made between about 1890 and 1950, of a painting by John Shackleton, an eighteenth-century English portraitist. George III reigned from 1760 to 1820, a period that included the loss of the American colonies and the long wars with revolutionary France, and royal likenesses like this one circulated widely as symbols of the crown. The print shows how a later printing process carried an eighteenth-century royal portrait to a far larger audience.
