Newton Center, a village within the city of Newton just west of Boston, is shown here from a high oblique angle that lays out its streets, house lots and public buildings as they stood in 1897. O.H. Bailey & Co., a Boston firm, produced many such bird's-eye town views in the late nineteenth century, when this style was a popular way for residents and visitors to see a community at a glance. Newton Center grew as a commuter village after rail service reached the area, and the map reflects that suburban character. Its labeled buildings and roads make it a useful record of the village at the close of the century.
