Needham Heights, a village within the town of Needham southwest of Boston, appears here as a bird's-eye view drawn from an imagined high vantage point. The 1887 panorama was made by O.H. Bailey & Co., a Boston firm known for detailed perspective views of New England towns, in which houses, churches, streets, and rail lines could be picked out at a glance. Such views were especially popular in the 1880s, when many communities wanted a portrait of their growing villages, and today they serve as a useful record of how the built landscape looked at that time.
