Drawn as if seen from high above the city, this 1879 bird's-eye panorama presents Boston's streets, wharves and rooftops in one sweeping view. O. H. Bailey and J. C. Hazen, two leading panoramic map artists of the era, made the drawing, and the Riverside Press in Cambridge printed it for the Boston firm Armstrong & Co. Views like this were prized for their street-level detail and for showing buildings in three dimensions, so the sheet also serves as a snapshot of the city while the Back Bay was still being built up.
