This bird's-eye view of Boston dates from 1873, the year after the Great Boston Fire of November 1872 destroyed much of the downtown district. Panoramic maps like this one drew buildings and streets in oblique perspective, so viewers could see the city from above as a continuous scene. The map shows Boston while its downtown was being rebuilt and the Back Bay was still taking shape on filled land along the Charles River. Its detail on streets, wharves and rail lines makes it useful for seeing how the city looked at that moment.
