Brockton's shoe factories set this town apart from the many other communities that were drawn as bird's-eye views in these years. The view dates to 1882, shortly after Brockton became a city, and it was produced by the lithography firm Beck & Pauli, which issued many panoramic town views in the 1870s and 1880s. Such views often showed streets, houses, and businesses from an imagined high vantage point, serving as a civic record of local growth. Brockton, long known as a center of shoemaking, makes a useful subject for seeing how a manufacturing town looked in the early 1880s.
