Hingham, on the South Shore of Massachusetts, is the subject of this 1885 panoramic map, drawn by the firm of A. F. Poole and George H. Walker & Co. Panoramic maps of this kind show a town in a bird's-eye view, as if seen from a hill above, so streets, church steeples, wharves and harbor are visible at once. Hingham was one of the oldest towns in the colony, settled in the 1630s, and by the 1880s its shipbuilding and maritime trade had given way to a quieter mix of farming, manufacturing and summer visitors. Maps like this were commissioned by local businesses and residents, and they make a useful record of how the town looked just before the turn of the century.
