Pensacola's deep natural harbor anchors this bird's-eye view from 1885, which shows the city laid out along the bay as if seen from above. The town had passed through Spanish, British and American rule, and the Pensacola Navy Yard, established in 1826, had long shaped its economy and population. Norris, Wellge & Co. drew such panoramas to let viewers read streets, wharves and buildings at a glance, so the map doubles as a detailed record of the city's appearance in the mid-1880s.
