Tallahassee was chosen as Florida's capital in 1824, a compromise between the older rival cities of St. Augustine and Pensacola, and this 1885 bird's-eye view shows it as a small Southern seat of government. The view was drawn by Henry Wellge, whose Milwaukee firm, Norris, Wellge & Co., produced many such panoramic city portraits in the 1880s. Its angled perspective, which shows streets, buildings and surrounding land together, was meant to give viewers a complete picture of a town at a single glance.
