This view looks down on Jacksonville from a high angle, with the St. Johns River curving past the city's streets, docks, and rail lines. Panoramic bird's-eye maps like this were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when artists sketched towns from an imagined elevated vantage point so that buildings, streets, and waterfront could be read at a glance. Jacksonville was growing fast then as a river port and a winter destination for visitors arriving by rail. Much of the downtown shown here was later lost in the Great Fire of 1901, which makes the drawing a useful record of the city before that rebuilding.
