This 1876 bird's-eye view shows Jacksonville, Florida, drawn in a high oblique perspective that lets the viewer see the city's streets, buildings, and the broad St. Johns River at once. Augustus Koch, a German-born draftsman who specialized in these detailed city panoramas, drew the view, and the firm of Alvord, Kellogg & Campbell published it. In the 1870s, Jacksonville was a river port and a growing winter destination for visitors from the North, so the map doubled as a promotional portrait of a city on the rise. Panoramas like this were prized for their detail and were often hung in homes, businesses, and civic offices.
