Healdsburg, a small town in Sonoma County, is shown here from above in the style of the late nineteenth-century "bird's eye view" panoramas, drawings made from an imagined high vantage point so that streets, buildings and fields could be read at a glance. Artists of this kind often worked from surveys and field sketches, then drew every house and tree in careful detail, which makes these views valuable to historians of town growth. The picture is a reduced copy, so its finest lines are softer than on the original sheet, but the layout of the grid and the surrounding orchards and farmland still reveal how the place looked when agriculture drove the local economy.
