Oconomowoc, a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, sits among a cluster of lakes that drew summer visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee by rail in the late 1800s, and this 1885 panoramic map shows the town as a bird's-eye view. Panoramic maps like this one were drawn in perspective, so streets, rooftops, and lakeshores appear as if seen from a hillside above. Marr & Richards, the engraving firm credited here, produced many such town views for the period, and their detail offers a useful record of how small Midwestern communities were laid out and promoted in the 1880s.
