This bird's-eye panorama shows Phoenix as it looked in 1885, when the town was still a small agricultural settlement in the Salt River Valley. Panoramic maps like this one, drawn in perspective from an imagined high vantage point, were a popular way to present growing western towns to residents and prospective settlers. The view was produced by the Schmidt Label & Lithographic Company with the artist C. J. Dyer, and it is valuable for seeing the layout of streets, fields, and buildings in the town's early years, when the valley's irrigation canals were shaping its growth.
