Chuquicamata, in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, was in 1926 the site of one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, operated by the Chile Exploration Company, an American firm associated with the Guggenheim interests. The town had grown up around the mine since the early 1910s, housing thousands of Chilean miners, many of them recruited from the nitrate fields and from the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands, along with American and British supervisors who lived in separate, better-appointed quarters. Copper from Chuquicamata was shipped by rail to the Pacific port of Antofagasta, and Chile's economy in the 1920s leaned heavily on exports of copper and nitrate. Labor disputes over wages and housing were common in these camps, and the mining population of the region had good reason to watch the company's decisions closely.
