Galveston, Texas, in 1926 was an island port still recovering its identity after the 1900 hurricane, which killed thousands and led to the great seawall and the raising of the city's grade. Cotton shipping and dock work had long shaped its economy, though the Houston Ship Channel, opened in 1914, was drawing commerce up the coast. By the mid-1920s the island also drew summer visitors to its Gulf beaches and bathhouses, and during Prohibition its reputation for open gambling and liquor made it a lively resort. The Bathing Girl Review, a bathing beauty show held on the sand, reflected that seaside trade, with contestants in swimsuits presented to a crowd of onlookers.
