Taken in 1981, this view comes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the Tennessee and North Carolina border along the crest of the southern Appalachians. Congress authorized the park in 1934, and it was dedicated in 1940 after private donations and state land purchases were assembled into a federal preserve. The name comes from the blue haze that often hangs over its ridges, a effect caused by vegetation releasing oils into the humid air. By the early 1980s the park was already one of the most visited in the country, drawn by its forests, wildflowers and long hiking trails.
