A park that straddles the North Carolina and Tennessee line, the Great Smoky Mountains would have been planned around maps like this one, which showed the roads, trailheads and overlooks a 1982 traveler needed. Routes such as Newfound Gap Road, which crosses the crest of the range, and destinations like Cades Cove and Clingmans Dome shaped how visitors experienced the park. Established in 1934 and dedicated in 1940, the Smokies were already among the most visited national parks in the country by the early 1980s. The map captures how people found their way through that landscape before digital navigation.
