This map shows the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as it looked in 1978, with its boundary running along the crest of the Appalachians and the state line between Tennessee and North Carolina. The park was created in the 1930s from land bought largely through private and state donations, and it became one of the most visited national parks in the country. By the late 1970s it was also recognized for its exceptional range of plant and animal life, which the 1976 designation as an international biosphere reserve helped highlight. A map from this period is useful for seeing how trails, campgrounds and gateway towns were arranged before later changes to the visitor network.
