The Great Smoky Mountains National Park trail map from 1988 shows the park's network of hiking routes, a record of how visitors were moving through one of the most visited protected areas in the United States. The park straddles the Tennessee and North Carolina border and was established in 1934, drawing on land that had been largely logged in the early twentieth century. Maps like this one helped hikers plan routes to landmarks such as Clingmans Dome and Alum Cave Bluffs, and they reflect how the park's trail system grew into a major recreational resource over the decades.
