A road-and-trail map from 1940 gives this piece a particular place in the story of the Great Smoky Mountains. Long before the park's boundaries were settled, the range was crossed mostly by footpaths, logging rail lines and rough wagon roads, so a map that measured distances along both roads and trails shows the park at an early stage of becoming a destination for visitors. The park was formally established in 1934 and the Newfound Gap Road, which crosses the crest of the range, was completed in the 1930s, and maps of this kind helped travelers plan routes through the mountains. Worth noticing is how the distances make the terrain itself legible, since mileage on a steep mountain route tells a different story than mileage on flat ground.
