A 1935 relief map presents the Great Smoky Mountains as a three-dimensional landscape, with raised ridges and valleys that show the rugged terrain of the area. Congress authorized the national park in 1934, but in 1935 the land was still being assembled from thousands of private holdings, so maps like this helped officials, planners and the public picture the scale of what was being preserved. Such models were a common way to explain a place whose boundaries and features were hard to grasp from the ground.
