This 1973 map shows the entire Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a single sheet that lays out the park's boundary along the Tennessee and North Carolina state line. Congress authorized the park in 1934, but assembling its land took years, as the federal government bought out many private landholders and the region's mountain communities were displaced. Maps like this one helped visitors find their way along the trails, roads and high ridges that the park protects, including the Appalachian Trail along the crest.
