Few places on the continent sit across a state line as neatly as the Great Smokies, and this 1989 visitor map shows how the park is laid out along the Tennessee and North Carolina border. Congress authorized the park in 1934, and it was formally dedicated in 1940 after land was assembled from thousands of private owners, many of whom had lived and farmed in the valleys. Maps like this one guided visitors past the park's roads, trailheads, and campgrounds, and they reflect a period when the park was drawing record numbers of people to its forests and waterfalls.
