A pulquería in Tacubaya, then a town on the southwestern edge of Mexico City, is the subject of this print, dated 1884 or 1885. Pulque, a milky drink made by fermenting the sap of the agave plant, had been a staple of working-class life in the Valley of Mexico for centuries, and shops like this one served as gathering places for laborers and street vendors. The Detroit Photographic Company, which issued views of places around the world, made the image, so it offers an outsider's record of everyday urban life in late nineteenth-century Mexico.
