Washerwomen, or *lavanderas*, at work in Mexico City were a common sight at the city's washing places in the late nineteenth century. The image is a photochrom, a process that transferred a black-and-white photograph onto lithographic stones and added color in layers, which gives it the soft, saturated tones seen here. It is catalogued as number 51148 from the Detroit Publishing Company and was kept in an album the firm used as a reference in its office, so it also shows how the company organized and sold its views of places around the world.
