Detroit Photographic Company made this color view of a Mexican hacienda, a large rural estate built around farmland and a main house, as one entry in its photochrom catalog. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, printed color from several stone plates and gave scenes a soft, painted quality. The picture, number 51165 in the company's series, was kept in an album the firm used as a reference in its office. It is dated between 1884 and 1900, when American publishers were selling such views to travelers and armchair readers.
